Keys you press turn red, and stay tinted once they've been tested. A few keys, such as Fn and some media keys, are handled by the keyboard or your operating system and can't be seen by any website. On a phone or tablet, connect a keyboard first. Tapping the keys on screen doesn't test anything.Using only a keyboard? Press Esc twice to leave the tester.
How to test your Hindi keyboard
It takes about a minute. Use your physical keyboard: clicking the keys on screen doesn't test anything.
Press every key
Click the keyboard above, then press each key on your Hindi keyboard. Working keys light up and stay tinted, and the counter shows your progress.
Check the special keys
Press the vowel signs (matras), the halant ् and the nukta. Try Shift and Alt Gr combinations as well, since many characters need them.
Match your keyboard
Choose Windows or Mac, and ISO if your keyboard has an extra key next to the left Shift, so the keyboard on screen matches yours.
About the Hindi keyboard
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script. The InScript layout is the common standard in India, and Windows and macOS include it along with other Hindi options. Phonetic keyboards, which turn Latin letters into Devanagari, are also popular.
The tester follows the physical key you press, so it shows whether the key itself works. The character that appears in a document depends on the layout selected in Windows or macOS. If the right key lights up but the wrong character appears, change your language setting. Our guide to the keyboard layout explains the standard rows and special keys.
How InScript is organised
InScript is the Indian government standard for typing Devanagari, and it’s the layout behind “Hindi Traditional” in Windows. Most keyboards sold in India have English letters only, sometimes with Devanagari stickers, so it helps to know the logic rather than search for every key:
- Vowel signs are on the left hand. The matras ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ sit on the left side of the keyboard. With Shift, the same keys type the full vowels अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ए ऐ ओ औ.
- Consonants are on the right hand. Each key types one consonant, and Shift gives its aspirated partner: क and ख, ग and घ, त and थ, द and ध, प and फ, ब and भ.
- The halant ् is on D, in the middle of the left hand, because you use it all the time to join consonants.

Typing matras and conjuncts
Always type the consonant first and the vowel sign after it, even when the sign appears before the letter. For कि, press K and then F. Unicode stores the letters in spoken order, and the font draws ि in front of क.
Conjuncts are made with the halant. Type the first consonant, the halant (D), then the second consonant: क + ् + ष gives क्ष, and त + ् + र gives त्र. The most common conjuncts also have shortcuts on the number row: Shift + 5 types ज्ञ, Shift + 6 त्र, Shift + 7 क्ष and Shift + 8 श्र.
Phonetic Hindi and older typing layouts
If you think in English letters, a phonetic keyboard is easier: you type “namaste” and it becomes नमस्ते. Windows includes a Hindi Phonetic keyboard next to Hindi Traditional, and Google’s Gboard offers the same on phones.
Some typing exams and older offices use the Remington typewriter layout with fonts like Kruti Dev. Those fonts aren’t Unicode: they draw Hindi shapes on top of English characters. Text typed in Kruti Dev turns into random English letters when it’s pasted somewhere without that font. For anything shared online, use InScript or phonetic Unicode typing.
Common Hindi keyboard problems
A dotted circle ◌ appears next to a vowel sign. The matra was typed without a consonant before it, or before the consonant. Delete it and type the consonant first.
English letters appear instead of Hindi. Hindi isn’t the active input. Press the Windows key + Space to switch, or Control + Space on a Mac.
Conjuncts show as separate letters with a halant. The font in that app can’t join them. Try a font made for Devanagari, such as Nirmala UI on Windows or Kohinoor Devanagari on a Mac.
What to press in the tester
The on-screen keyboard above shows the InScript characters on each key, with the English letter small in the corner. Keys are matched by position, so you can test every key in English or Hindi mode. Pay attention to D (halant), the matra keys on the left, the bracket keys for ड and ़, and the number row keys that hold the conjunct shortcuts.
Add the Hindi keyboard to Windows or Mac

Fix common Hindi keyboard problems
Most problems come from a wrong layout setting or a stuck key, and both are quick to fix.
Wrong characters appear
The wrong layout is active. Switch with the Windows key + Space, or Control + Space on a Mac, and remove layouts you don't use. Learn how keyboard layouts work.
A key does nothing
If it stays dark in the tester, clean around it and try our fixes for stuck keys. A full keyboard reset fixes many software problems.
Everything types in capitals
Your Caps Lock key may be stuck on. Tap it once, then check it in the tester above.
The keyboard keeps disconnecting
Replace the batteries, move closer to the computer and pair your wireless keyboard again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my Hindi keyboard online?
Click the keyboard tester at the top of this page and press every key. Each working key lights up and stays tinted. Pay special attention to the vowel signs (matras), the halant ् and the nukta.
Why does my Hindi keyboard type the wrong characters?
Your computer is using a different layout from the one printed on your keys. If the tester lights up the key you pressed, the keyboard itself is fine. Add the Hindi layout in Windows or macOS and switch to it.
How do I switch between Hindi and English?
On Windows, press the Windows key + Space to move through your layouts. On a Mac, press Control + Space or pick the layout from the input menu in the menu bar.
Is this Hindi keyboard tester free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no download and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
